Plague Parenting: COVID-19 Kids Activities

Updated: Mar 22, 2020

Are you used to working at work and parenting remotely? Now you're working remotely and parenting at home! Here is our curated list of fun kids' activities and resources on how to do them! Are you a parent who is PRIVILEGED enough to be home with your kids, home getting paid in the midst of the COVID-19 SARS2 Coronavirus? You’re sitting here like “Dang I don’t want my kids’ brains to melt and stuff” but you’re not what the “elites” may call a natural educator? Are you great with your children but have literally no ideas what to do with these weird squirmy small people that you need corralled? Don’t worry, we here at the Art Pros Podcast have put together a list of the best l’il projects and things you can do with these kids, whether they are #quaranteens or #coronakiddos, enjoy struggling through educating them while the world burns around us. Welcome to the Positive Pandemic Education Station. Temporary homeschoolers welcome, paranoid parentals avoiding the plague welcome. You can thank those of us who don’t social distance for this. Welcome to PLAGUE PARENTING 101: Fun Sh*t to distract you and your kids. (this page will be updated as we come across new ideas that we think you and your kids will love)

1)ART CARS!

Art Cars: This fun-at-home workshop is practiced by professional educators including the geniuses at the American Visionary Art Museum, the Orange Show in Houston, and, it involves producing a scale-car and decorating it like some dirty hippy’s dead-head bus. Or for those of us who are cultured, it’s similar to decorating a jeepney

While some of you may have a big real car to work with, it is just as effective to use this (How to make a cardboard car) and then decorate it as follows with anything, glitter, hot glue, Paper-mache, googly eyes, cat hair, eggshells, old clothing, rubber bands, and good ol’ fashion acrylic paint. Don’t use oil paint. it is toxic, expensive, hard as heck to remove from clothing, and takes FOREVER to dry.

2)PAPER BAG PUPPETS!

Paper Bag Puppets: Remember those? Yeah, I bet you haven’t thought of them in a while, but they still exist and they’re extremely fun! Not only are they absolutely kid-friendly but they’re 100% cute so grab some safety scissors, construction paper and to mix it up, you can even upcycling your kids' terrible report cards if you don’t want to contribute to your carbon footprint! Try acting out your feelings with your kids; especially effective if you need therapy but can’t afford it.

(Note: not actually effective therapy, consider reaching out to some non-profit like this one:https://probonocounseling.org/)

3)PILLOW AND FURNITURE FORTS

A Good’ Ol Fashion Coffee Table Fort: Yes, bust out the comforters and couch cushions because this project is one that both kids and parents absolutely love. Making a fort with the nearest living room construction materials are the building blocks of any spawn’s childhood. If you want this to be the ultimate fun-parent activity, jump in there and use your adult brain to engineer the largest, most jaw-dropping indoor coffee table fort. Consider adding a few rooms to the fort so you can quietly jump into your scheduled conference calls when you’re not too busy farting around with your youngins.

4)DIY ESCAPE ROOMS

DIY Escape Room: This project is easily one of the most time-intensive, but you can be confident that all the effort will be worth it when you realize your half-clones have been stuck on one of your puzzles for hours. You can set a time limit if you want to decide how much peace and quiet you need and go from there!

We found this link from lockpaperscissors.co very effective for in-house escape room puzzles that seriously keep those little ones busy...COME ON BEN ITS JUST 4 COLORS AND YOUR MOTHERS MAIDEN NAME BACKWARDS AND HER SSN WRITTEN IN GOAT BLOOD. WE JUST NEED A SHORT 4-HOUR BREAK TO COMPLETE OUR BUSINESS. IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK.

5)JUST A REGULAR OLD GAMEBOY

(Last Tip). A Game Boy: Just give the kid a game boy and get it over with so you can take your Epsom salt bath with a glass of Sangria without having to worry if your kid is going to swallow an electrical outlet. Actually, you might want to check on ‘em right now... it sounds a little too quiet in this 9 bedroom Tudor style home. Additionally, we have added a couple of videos and links to cool stuff other organizations have been doing in case you were looking for something a LITTLE more informative.
